WHAT IS IT AND WHAT IS ITS ROLE IN PREGNANCY?

Progesterone is a steroid hormone that is secreted at the ovarian level, and during the early stages of pregnancy in the corpus luteum, later in advanced stages by the placenta.

Its name arose in 1935 when Dr. Allen and Cornes presented the name “progestin” and on the other hand the scientist Butenandt “lueteosterone”, in combination of these two words “progesterone”.

This hormone has different functions, it also serves as a contraceptive, which were his first discoveries about it. However, its importance during pregnancy was later discovered.

Progesterone during the first weeks of pregnancy is synthesized by the corpus luteum inside the ovary, and after week 7 of gestation, the luteal-placental transition is performed, which the placenta is in charge of synthesizing it during the rest of the pregnancy,

Among its main functions within pregnancy are:

-Stimulates secretion within the endometrium (uterus) to promote nutrients to gametes.

-Fertilization, embryonic development and implantation.

-It plays an immunoprotective role

-Development and preparation of the breast for future lactation

-Keeps the uterus relaxed and without contractions.

Progesterone as its name indicates PRO-GESTATION to promoting and maintaining pregnancy.
