Does Chlamydia put your fertility on risk?

According to data from the WHO (World Health Organization), until 2019 there are more than one million infected from sexually transmitted diseases everyday in the world. The highest incidence is on eight pathogens. Some of the most common are syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis, all of them can cure. However, hepatitis b, simplex herpes, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)  and papilloma virus are not

.

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease that is recognized by the WHO as the leading cause of preventable infertility.

Its a disease that in many cases is not diagnosed because it is usually mistaken for a common infection.

How does it spread?

There are several ways to get the infection, the main way is by having unprotected sexual activity. Other ways are through oral sex and also through childbirth.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms can appear between one and three weeks after the sexual activity, but there is also a possibility of not having any symptoms.

Some of the symptoms can be:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Light bleeding after menstruation days
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Pain when urinating
  • Pain during sexual activity, etc.

What consequences can this infection leave in men and women?

If its not detected on time and its not treated it can cause infertility, in men and women.

In men, it can produce epididymitis, an inflammation of the epididymus, the area where sperm mature. It can cause sterility when its not diagnosed and treated on time.

In women;  in the internal genitalia tumors can be adhesion and cause inflammation.  If the tumor have adhesion in the tubes, the eggs can´t reach the uterus, and cant be fertilized or implanted.  This is one of the reasons why infected women cant´ achieve a pregnancy naturally.

The consequences are:

-Pelvic inflammatory disease: Between 20 to 30% of cases are due to this infection.

-Gestational complications such as RPM (premature rupture of membranes)

How to know if the infection has left sequelae?

Often the consequences are seen until a couple does not achieve a pregnancy naturally, behind this there may be other reasons,  after having suffered a chlamydia infection, it is very common that there is infertility.
